There are many aspects to consider when editing a text. Not only spelling and punctuation are important, but also consider word choice and naturalness of the text, which contribute heavily to the style. Our copy editing process is designed to correct any grammatical or syntactical errors in your text. We will check your references, and we also check the entire text for consistency and uniformity. For example, though both forms are acceptable, if you refer to “e-mail” at the beginning of the text, you need to be consistent throughout, not referring to “email”, sans hyphen, later in the text. If you use metric measurements at the beginning of your text, you wouldn’t want to switch to imperial units later in the text. This could cause confusion to the reader. Uniformity and consistency are critical.
The target audience of your text is another crucial consideration. This determines the style and register of the text: the layout on the page, as well as the vocabulary, and the grammatical and syntactical complexity.

What is Skriibl's process for copy editing texts?
1. Initial Contact
Upon receipt of your request, we review the documents and all related materials. We then draft a proposal and contract which sets out the scope of the project including all tasks to be performed, deadlines, our rates, and a quote of the expected total cost to complete the project.
2. Agreement
Upon reaching an agreement and receipt of the signed contract and any required deposit payment, our linguists will begin your copy editing project.
3. Review
We carefully review the document, taking special note of the structure of the document and anything we need to research, including industry knowledge and linguistic pitfalls. We may contact you for any necessary clarifications.
4. Copy Editing
The linguist will now review and edit the entire document meticulously, looking for any grammar or punctuation errors, and correcting any awkwardly phrased segments. The whole document should be fluid and meaningful to the reader.
We check any references, correct inconsistencies, and minor formatting issues.
5. Proofreading
This step is optional, but if you want your text to be ready for the presses, the final step is proofreading.
Our linguists will do a final round of proofreading and error correction. Usually, this will be a different linguist than the one who performed the copy editing.
A second set of eyes and a fresh review of the target material helps to smooth out all the small details, and ready your text for publishing.
6. Delivery
Now that the document is perfect, you will be asked to make your final payment, and the document will be delivered.
7. Polishing Touches
We now give you the opportunity to review the material and make any clarifications or corrections immediately after delivery.
Final corrections will be made, and the editing is complete.
